Op-Ed: Republicans want to win — and Trump’s now a loser

The battle lines in America are being drawn. The most important political moment of the year, and decades, in the history of conservatism.

Republicans don’t want to “fundamentally transform America,” as former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani told the New Yorker. Nor do they want to have a “dramatic and shocking” change of course, as a leading Republican strategist says.

Instead, the party wants to win. And win big.

In this battle, the Republican Party is united, more united than it has been in the past several decades.

But the party is also divided.

And the divisions are getting deeper.

This is not an unusual political year in America. But this is different.

There is more national attention focused on the politics of race, the economy — and the media. Trump is going after the news media — and the news media is angry. And angry politicians, especially Republicans, are angriest.

The divisions between party leadership are even deeper than on the right.

And they are getting deeper.

In this battle, the Republican Party is united, more united than it has been in the past several decades.

And yet, the party is divided. And the divisions are getting deeper.

This is not an unusual political year in America. But it is different because this moment is bigger than two major parties.

The Republican Party will need to make a decision: either a dramatic change of direction, or a win of a lot of big battles (and maybe even a change).
