Evan McMullin and Paul Krugman: We should be debating ideas, not just debate candidates

TUCKER CARLSON: Evan McMullin is a fraud — Utah voters should know what they’re voting for and who’s running for them, and stop giving him their trust.

(END VIDEO TAPE)

ROBERTS: Evan McMullin is a former political candidate. He’s running in this election as a candidate for president. Evan McMullin is not your ordinary candidate. He’s a Republican congressman from Utah, Jon Huntsman, who served as U.S. ambassador to Russia during the Obama administration.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JON HUNTSMAN: I can say with conviction that the United States is stronger than ever, has stronger leadership with an American president than it’s had in the past, and that the American people are best served by a man who is ready to lead instead of lagging behind as so many other countries are doing.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ROBERTS: Jon Huntsman is a Republican who says he’s not running for president. So why is he calling himself Evan McMullin? Why does he want your vote? He didn’t want to tell us why he was running for president. He told us he didn’t want to talk about that.

There you were, though, with the transcript of his debate with Paul Krugman of the New York Times. You see the debate on our website.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JON HUNTSMAN: I think we can make a real difference in this country with some big ideas.

PAUL KRUGMAN: That’s the debate we’re missing. They’re missing the debate.

HUNTSMAN: We should be debating ideas, not just debate candidates.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ROBERTS: I agree with you about this. I think we should be debating ideas, not just debate candidates.

I was in the studio back on Saturday, and we are not going to cover it. But the fact is that he hasn’t talked about it, and he’s not going to talk about it.

We were talking before you read the transcript of this Sunday’s debate.

You heard Evan McMullin say he doesn’t want to be president of the United States. What does he want to be president of the United States?
