Bianca Andreescu gives Nike a dressing down at US Open before issuing apology for ‘inappropriate comment’

Nike’s senior vice president of global and community affairs was heckled by fans before she had even spoken before a row erupted over criticism of the Chinese-based company’s working conditions at its American base.

Bianca Andreescu, the first female board director at the sportswear giant, was delivering a speech at the opening day of the US Open, when a young fan in the audience shouted out “Shame on you” as he called out the words “inappropriate comment” during Andreescu’s rant.

Andreescu’s response? She told the fan, “It was my intention to start my speech with a joke. I just don’t like jokes about the working conditions [in China].”

The controversy came just weeks after it emerged that eight American employees of the company had died in an air conditioning unit in 2012.
