Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka both lose in US Open first round
Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka are in the first round of the US Open which is being televised live on FOX Sports 2. Both are former world number one players.
Raducanu defeated Francesca Schiavone, who came to the US Open on a wildcard.
So what has happened to the world number one? We had expected to see more quality tennis this year.
Osaka is a young player with her first Grand Slam win. She lost in the third round to American Madison Keys.
Both players had been in impressive form before the U.S. Open.
Raducanu had won the Madrid Open and the China Open earlier this year.
However, she lost in four sets to world number two Serena Williams. Osaka had been also brilliant in her first Slam of the year. She thrashed Caroline Wozniacki in the third round.
Emma Raducanu wins Madrid Open
Raducanu beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Beijing Open, who had given Raducanu a run for her money. She defeated the top ranked player last year in Mona Barthel, who will be a major obstacle for Raducanu in the quarter-finals.
Raducanu was one of the favourites to win the Madrid Open because of her win in the Beijing Open.
However, her main opponent, Ana Ivanovic, is an old star, who was world number one for a long time. Ivanovic has only recently come back.
Raducanu will be aiming to qualify for the third round with a first round win.
Osaka had suffered a loss in her first round in the Dubai Tennis Championships earlier this year, which had caused her to drop to world number two.
However, she was able to fight back and won the China Open. This was against Caroline Wozniacki.
She will now be looking to qualify for the third round with a performance that will be remembered in the press.
Osaka will also be looking to qualify for the third round.
